Natural Pain Relief Options I Swear By
Hey guys, Fallon here! If you’re new here, welcome! I’m a certified functional nutritionist (in training!) who helps women feel empowered in their health journey, learn how to confidently eat well, find healing and support during chronic illness, and gain kitchen confidence through simple, delicious recipes for you and your family!
Today we’re going to cover my very favorite natural pain relief options! With anything I do personally or share about, I want to honor our hormones, biology, and what’s been time-tested to be safe when used correctly, and also, effective! We are learning more and more the ramifications of certain medications, so I want to have alternative options for pain support when necessary!
I’ve been in a healing season where I’ve needed a bit more pain and inflammation support, which has ultimately been a big gift, so that I can share my experience trying out all the different natural and herbal pain relief options for those who don’t want to use NSAID’s or other over the counter medicines like Tylenol, etc (which can deplete glutathione in the body!)!
That’s not to say we can’t EVER use those medications, but as a long-term support, I want to tend toward things that are also creating a healing response in my body: herbs, homeopathic support, and foods that can naturally help lower inflammation, provide antioxidants, and allow the body to experience it’s God-given ability to heal.
But even with that goal in mind, pain is no fun. Sometimes, inflammation is a helpful response (to aid in injury healing, etc) and sometimes we have longer term or acute inflammation that needs gentle support.
Whatever the case, I’m so thankful there are safe and gentle alternatives that offer herbal or homeopathic support to ease our pain, instead of having to reach for OTC relief!
Here’s a compilation of all my favorite over the counter pain relief medication alternatives!
As a note, this is not medical advice, and please check any new herbs or supplements against existing medication or supplements, alongside your practitioner!
Best Natural Pain Relief options
All things turmeric
Curcumin, the compound found in turmeric, is a very powerful anti-inflammatory, which can be used both as long-term inflammation support through dietary intake (I’m making allllll the curry and turmeric-based recipes right now!!), and as an immediate pain relief option. My favorite is this Inflamma Response herbal supplement; it works really quickly, can be taken several times a day, and is easy to mix into any drink!
I also have really appreciated the Curamin brand for extra strength pain relief (these are a bit larger pills as a heads up!)
As a note - I like to keep my personal turmeric consumption to about 500-600mg daily or less. If you’re taking a lot of different herbal supplements, just take note of your daily total!Zyflamend
Bless this brand - this herbal blend has been a lifesaver for me in seasons of having more inflammation! I love both the general pain relief supplement and the nighttime formula! These are great as a general supplement for chronic inflammation and also for acute issues (headaches, joint pain, etc!)
This may have deserved to be higher on the list for how much I LOVE it. Meadowsweet contains salicylic acid, which is the same compound found in aspirin that offers such great pain relief (as an aside, meadowsweet should not be used with an allergy to aspirin or other salicylate-containing medications).
Meadowsweet is also a powerful anti-oxidant that can help lower chronic inflammation and improve cellular health. My favorite way to consume it is in a tea! This has been especially helpful for nighttime pain (things like fibromyalgia, etc where pain can be a bit worse during sleeping hours); I will often brew a cup with about 1 tablespoon of meadowsweet loose leaf tea and enjoy that as my nightcap!
Arnica homeopathic medicine can be found either in pellets (linked here) or also as a topical application - this is a great tool to have on hand for inflammation in joints or from injury, impact, etc!
You won’t find me without a bag of this in my house. Epsom salt, or magnesium, baths are incredibly helpful in reducing inflammation, and often provide relief fairly immediately! I use about a cup at a time to make the bag last longer - the effects are still quite potent!
Be sure to check out my entire post on castor oil here! Castor oil is a great topical remedy to use on sore joints, muscles, or any other aches and pains.
I hope this helps you feel empowered to tackle any aches and pains that come up from a holistic and gentle perspective!
