10 Signs Your Metabolism Is Slowing Down (And Why You Might Not Be Eating Enough)

Signs Your Metabolism Is Slow

For years, we’ve been taught to eat less.

Fewer calories.
Fewer carbs.
Less food in general.

And yet, so many women feel:

  • Exhausted

  • Stuck in their weight

  • Constantly thinking about food

  • Disconnected from their bodies

What if the problem isn’t that you’re eating too much…but that you’re not eating enough to support your body well?

Because when your body doesn’t feel safe or nourished, it adapts.

It slows down.

What a “Slow Metabolism” Actually Means:

Your metabolism isn’t just about weight!

It’s how your body:

  • Turns food into energy

  • Supports your hormones

  • Regulates temperature, digestion, and mood

When it slows down, your body becomes more conservative with energy - burning less and holding on to more.

And one of the most common (and overlooked) reasons?

👉 Chronic under-eating

Eating too little can signal to your body that food is scarce, causing it to reduce how many calories it burns.

10 Signs Your Metabolism May Be Slowing Down

1. You’re tired all the time

If your body doesn’t have enough fuel, it simply cannot produce energy efficiently.

Fatigue is one of the most common signs of both:

  • under-eating

  • and a slowing metabolism

2. You feel cold often

Your metabolism helps regulate body temperature.

When it slows, your body produces less heat, leaving you constantly cold - especially in your hands and feet!

3. You’re not losing weight (even though you’re eating less)

This is where so many women feel stuck.

Eating too little can actually cause your body to:

  • conserve energy

  • burn fewer calories

  • hold onto weight

4. You think about food all the time

This isn’t a lack of willpower!

It’s your body trying to get your attention.

Persistent hunger and cravings often increase when you’re not eating enough.

5. Your hair, skin, or nails are struggling

Your body prioritizes survival over beauty.

So when nutrients are low:

  • hair thinning

  • dull skin

  • brittle nails

can start to show up.

6. Your digestion feels slow or off

A slowed metabolism often means slowed digestion:

  • bloating

  • constipation (we want a healthy BM every day!)

  • heaviness after meals

7. Your cycle is irregular (or missing)

For many women, this is one of the clearest signals.

Your body will down-regulate reproductive function when it doesn’t have enough energy.

We’ve been lied to as women that our cycles have to be painful or miserable - when our bodies are in a vibrant state, it is possible to have a cycle come and go with little disturbance!

8. You feel anxious, irritable, or “off”

Your brain requires steady nourishment, and when you’re under-fueled:

  • mood swings

  • anxiety

  • brain fog

can increase.

9. You have trouble sleeping

Wrestling with falling asleep and staying asleep can be a gentle message from our bodies that we need more support. Blood sugar swings, mineral imbalances, and other invisible issues can increase our tendency toward insomnia and that “tired but wired” feeling.

10. You’re doing everything “right”… but feel worse

You’re eating clean.
You’re trying to be disciplined.

But instead of thriving, you feel depleted.

That’s often a sign your body needs more nourishment, not more restriction!

Okay, take a breath. I threw a LOT at you.

You're likely either rejoicing at how well you're doing or just did a tail-spin into panic mode at what you need to heal.

If you DO find yourself needing some support in these areas, it can be done!

I want you to hear: you can recover your health and vibrancy without dieting, restriction, or eating the same bland meal over and over.

Why Eating Enough Matters (A Shift in Perspective)

We’ve been taught to treat food as something to control.

But food is meant to nourish, sustain, connect us, and give us joy!

When we consistently under-eat, the body adapts for survival:

  • metabolism slows

  • hormones shift

  • energy drops

This isn’t your body failing you.

It’s your body trying to protect you!

A More Traditional (and Biblical) Approach to Nourishment

Throughout history, food wasn’t feared. It was received with gratitude.

Meals were an opportunity to gather, rest, give thanks, and replenish.

There was no obsession with eating less, only with eating well.

Caring for your body isn’t about shrinking it.
It’s about stewarding it wisely.

I love that Jesus’ ministry on earth often including feeding people and sharing meals with them - we get to reflect the heart of God in this every time we eat!

What to Do If You Think You’re Not Eating Enough

Start gently.

Not with extremes, but with wisdom!

  • Eat consistent meals

  • Include nourishing carbohydrates, fats, and protein

  • Stop skipping meals

  • Prioritize real, whole foods

And most importantly:

👉 Begin to rebuild trust with your body.
