For five years, I truly thought I was someone who simply couldn't drink coffee. Even one cup could leave me anxious, uncomfortable, and regretting my life choices. I missed the ritual, the flavor, and the joy of a warm cup in the morning - but I assumed coffee and I were permanently broken up.

I thought coffee was the problem. It turned out the way I was drinking coffee was the problem.

And if you've been around here for a minute, you know I eventually came back to coffee - and that it turns out, it wasn't the coffee that was the problem. It was how I was drinking it, and more importantly, what I was drinking.

Today I want to go deeper on the "what," because if you're a health-conscious woman who has ever wondered why coffee feels bad even when you're doing everything right… this might be the piece you've been missing.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Conventional Coffee

Here's something that doesn't get talked about nearly enough: a lot of the coffee sitting on grocery store shelves is heavily sprayed with pesticides. Coffee is actually one of the most chemically treated crops in the world, and conventional farming practices can also support mold growth on the beans themselves.

That mold produces something called mycotoxins - toxic compounds that can mess with your energy, digestion, immune function, and even hormones. While not everyone reacts to coffee the same way, some people find they feel noticeably better when they switch to coffee that's tested for mold and mycotoxins. For me, reducing potential exposures wherever possible felt like a worthwhile step!

I know. It's a lot. But stay with me, because there's genuinely good news here.

What I Changed (And Why It Worked)

When I started researching what was actually in my coffee, I stumbled onto Purity Coffee - and it made me SO excited. One thing I particularly appreciate is that Purity doesn't just focus on what isn't in their coffee. They also prioritize what is. Their sourcing and roasting practices are designed to preserve beneficial antioxidants and other naturally occurring compounds found in coffee, making it a product that's intentionally crafted with health in mind from start to finish.

Here's what sets it apart:

  • USDA Certified Organic - meaning no synthetic pesticides, period

  • Mold and mycotoxin tested at every stage of the supply chain - not just once, but multiple times from farm to bag

  • Specialty-grade, high-altitude Arabica beans grown using regenerative and biodynamic farming practices

  • Roasted specifically to maximize antioxidants, not just for flavor

  • Third-party lab results available right on their website - total transparency

I was impressed before I even opened the bag. And then I tasted it, and OHH MY GOSH. If the health benefits hadn't already sold me, the flavor alone would have. It's the richest, smoothest, most genuinely lovely cup I've ever had. Every time I travel and drink coffee somewhere else I'm reminded of just how good Purity actually is.

After several years of trial and error, Purity is the only coffee I consistently buy for our home. It's one of those products I recommend because I genuinely use it every single day.

My Favorite Purity Coffee Blends

One question I get fairly often is, "Okay, but which one do you actually buy?"

The truth is, I rotate between a few different Purity blends depending on the season and what sounds good that day. I haven't found a single one I dislike, but these three are the ones you'll most often find in my pantry:

Ease – This is probably the blend I reach for most often. It's smooth, balanced, and incredibly easy to drink. If you're new to Purity Coffee and aren't sure where to start, Ease is a wonderful first choice.

Flow – When I want something a little brighter and more vibrant, I reach for Flow. It has a lively flavor profile that feels especially refreshing as an iced coffee or cold brew during warmer months.

Protect – Protect is rich, comforting, and deeply satisfying. It's the blend I tend to gravitate toward during busy seasons when I want my morning coffee to feel like a cozy ritual rather than just a caffeine source. It’s got extra liver-supportive components, which I love!

I enjoy rotating between all three because they each bring something a little different to the table while still offering the same high standards for sourcing, testing, and quality that made me fall in love with Purity in the first place.

If you're overwhelmed by all the options, I'd start with Ease and go from there! That's the blend I most often recommend to friends and family who are trying Purity for the first time.

And if you’re more of a iced coffee girlie - the cold brew blend is AMAZING.

The Other Two Things That Changed Everything

Switching my coffee brand was the biggest piece, but I want to be honest - it wasn't the only change. Here are the other two things I did that made my body actually thrive with coffee instead of revolt against it:

1. I switched my brew method

Traditional drip coffee makers and single-serve pod machines can harbor mold and often involve plastic components that heat up with your water (not ideal). I now exclusively use a pour over or a French press - glass or stainless, nothing fancy required. Seems small, makes a big difference.

2. I started having coffee with my breakfast, not instead of it

I add quality organic, grass-fed half & half and a little maple syrup or coconut sugar to my cup, and I drink it alongside an actual meal - not as a replacement for one, and not before I've eaten anything. This alone changed how my stress hormones and digestion responded to caffeine. When cortisol is already elevated from an empty stomach and then you add coffee on top… your body is not going to be happy about it. Breakfast first, always!

Since I no longer drink coffee on an empty stomach, you'll always find me pairing it with one of these easy breakfast recipes in my Nourish Cookbook, or this nourishing sweet potato hash!

why I drink coffee with breakfast, not by itself

The Bigger Picture

Here's what I want you to walk away with: coffee isn't inherently bad. The research genuinely supports that when used in a balanced way, it offers real health benefits - antioxidants, reduced inflammation, liver support, and more (I go deep on the science in this post if you want the PubMed receipts 😄).

But the quality of what you're putting in your body matters just as much as the habit itself. Organic, mold-free, thoughtfully sourced coffee is a genuinely different product than what most of us grew up drinking - and your body knows it.

I'm not someone who thinks we need to make every health decision from a place of fear or rigidity. But I am someone who believes that when we have access to better options, it's worth knowing about them. And Purity Coffee is genuinely the best option I've found.

Who Might Notice the Biggest Difference?

You may especially want to consider organic, mold-tested coffee if:

  • You struggle with digestive discomfort after drinking it

  • You're already prioritizing organic foods where possible

  • You're working on reducing toxic load in your home and diet

  • You love coffee but feel like it doesn't love you back

Not everyone will notice a dramatic difference, but many people find quality matters more than they realized.
