Why Real Food for Kids Matters (Simple Ways to Support Healthy Eating)
(Pictured: the chicken & stars recipe from Tots - straight nostalgia, made nourishing!)
With the launch of my brand new kids' cookbook, Tots, I wanted to go deeper into the why — why it matters so much that our kids are eating nourishing, real food, and why I believe it's one of the most powerful things we can do for the next generation.
But first - thank you. From the bottom of my heart, the support and excitement around Tots has completely blown me away. Hundreds of families are already bringing these recipes into their homes and I truly couldn't be more honored.
Why Real Food for Kids Matters (Simple Ways to Support Healthy Eating)
When I first started paying more attention to what we were eating, I fell prey to the lie that it needed to be perfect.
We were in the throes of chronic illness, my son and I both, and monitoring our diet felt like the only thing we could control.
Real food truly changed our lives, and now that we have cut through the healthy food noise and confusion, it feels much more sustainable and accessible and less about doing everything exactly perfectly!
What Do We Mean by “Real Food”?
When I talk about real food, I’m not talking about anything complicated!
I’m talking about foods that are:
recognizable
minimally processed
and made with ingredients you can actually identify
Things like:
milk, cheese, yogurt
fruit and simple carbohydrates (rice, oats, etc)
meat, eggs, and broth
butter and traditional fats
Real food focuses on single ingredients that came from the earth in some capacity and are truly God-provided!
My Road to Real Food
Many of you already know my family's story and the why behind Fallon's Table — but for those who are new here, here it is in a nutshell.
When my second son was born, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's, put on medication, and told more or less: "Good luck. This will never go away and there's nothing you can do but medicate."
My son was also dealing with the worst case of eczema our doctors had ever seen — plus anaphylactic food allergies, lung issues, and a severely limited diet. The answer there? Same thing: "Good luck. Medicate."
I sensed a pattern. And I felt a righteous anger at being failed by a system that had no real answers for us.
So I dove head-first into healing through food and holistic living — and saw immediate, tangible results.
It wasn't a linear journey. It took years of wading through diets, protocols, doctor visits, and medical bills to figure out what actually worked on a sustainable level. I got lost in restriction along the way, whittling my diet down to 7–10 foods at one point.
But today? I'm off medication. My Hashimoto's is in remission. My son has healed from many of his allergies and chronic issues. And I get the incredible privilege of sharing our story — and the recipes that helped heal us.
Why Real Food for Kids Matters
Kids are growing, developing, and constantly using energy.
And what they eat plays a role in:
their energy levels
mood and focus
digestion
and overall development
When meals are built around more nourishing foods, it tends to support:
steadier energy
fewer crashes
and better overall balance
Not to mention, there are countless chronic illnesses and conditions that can be supported, reversed, and even prevented through a focus on a nutrient-dense diet - we are living, breathing proof of that as a family!
The sooner our sweet little ones have supportive foods as a regular rhythm, the better chance they have at a truly heathy future. That doesn’t mean we have to be perfect and it certainly doesn’t mean we can control every little thing - but the scientific reality is that what we eat really does matter to our health!
One of the biggest shifts for us was becoming more aware of ingredients - especially things like artificial dyes that can show up in everyday foods. I shared more about why we choose to avoid them (and what to look for) here.

Why the Next Generation Needs Real Food Now
In a culture where autoimmune disease and chronic illness have skyrocketed, where daily medication and inflammation are normalized, and where kids are sicker than ever - it is more important than ever for our homes to be centered around real food.
My family is living proof that real food and holistic wellness is powerful. I believe parents and families are waking up to the reality that something needs to change with the way we eat. But here's what I want you to know: it doesn't have to be restrictive, boring, or hard.
The recipes I create are unique without being complicated. Exciting without feeling unattainable. And delicious without sacrificing nourishment!

Keep It Familiar for Kids
Kids don’t need complicated meals.
They usually do best with:
simple foods
consistent options
and meals they recognize (traditions and weekly rhythms are so fun and grounding!)
What This Looks Like in Real Life
It’s not perfectly balanced every time. It’s not elaborate. It looks like:
simple meals
repeat favorites
and not overthinking every detail
And over time, that consistency adds up!
Where This Became Easier for Me
The biggest shift wasn’t just understanding real food - it was having simple ways to actually implement it!
Because knowing what to feed your kids is one thing…but doing it consistently is another.
That’s a big part of why I created my Tots Cookbook - simple, real-food recipes designed to make this feel doable in everyday life.
It Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
There’s a lot of pressure around feeding kids “perfectly.” But in my experience, it doesn’t have to look like that.
Focusing on:
simple ingredients
balanced meals
and consistency
goes a lot further than trying to do everything at once!
Final Thoughts
Real food often isn’t about doing more. It’s about simplifying!
Choosing foods that support your kids in a way that feels sustainable -and letting that be enough.
